You need to modify two files to change the memory allocation in SE on Windows.

For the SE service
Open the service.properties file, located in the root directory of Backup Professional (the default directory is C:\Program Files\Attix5 Backup Professional SE\ ), and add the following line:

memory=512 (Where 512 is the amount of memory you want to allocate in MB. The default is 256 MB so the setting needs to be more than this)

Ensure that the memory entry in service.properties is added as a new line in the file and do NOT add a semicolon at the end of the existing entry.

For the GUI (note that this is optional and is usually not needed)
In the a5backup.properties file you need to add the following line:

application.memory=512 (Where 512 is the amount of memory you want to allocate in MB. The default is 256 MB).

Restart the service and GUI for the changes to become effective.

  1. You must have more physical memory available than the value specified otherwise the system may start to swap. E.g. on a machine with 1 GB of RAM use around 512 MB for Java.
  2. The setting only sets an upper limit for Java and does not mean it will constantly use the specified amount of memory.  Typically the extra memory will only be used during a backup.
